The Grand Am name instantly conjures up images of adventurous, carefree models that tend to emphasize the fun side of driving. Indeed, this is the element that GM’s Pontiac division primarily focuses on—though of course they neglect none of the other areas either.

So when you speak of the GT model group of Grand Ams, which are the sporty ones in the family, you’re really talking about a car that likes to let its drivers feel the rush of driving excitement.

The GT name is affixed to both sedan and coupe Grand Ams. Sedans have four doors, while coupes have two. For 2004, Pontiac’s best-selling cars are much improved: all models use hydroformed chassis, have rack-and-pinion steering and performance tuned suspensions.

Under the Hood
The GT line of 2004 Pontiac Grand Am models employs a 3.4-liter V6 engine that produces 175 horsepower at 4800 rpm and 205 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. This engine is the same found on certain SE models, but Grand Am GT models use a standard Ram Air version with cold-air induction and lower-restriction exhaust that boosts performance.

All GT models feature a 4-speed automatic transmission. Their stiff body structure translates into supreme handling characteristics. Take one around a sharp turn and you’ll see it for yourself.

Also contributing to the ride quality is a four-wheel independent suspension system. The aluminum suspension knuckles reduce unsprung weight and dampen all sorts of unpleasant road surfaces.

Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Two GT models are offered: the base version and a GT1 trim. The latter adds on such things as a power sunroof, an AM/FM/CD/MP3 player and steering-wheel radio controls.

If you have any doubts about the intention of the Grand Am GT, a cursory look at some of the standard equipment should dispel those thoughts. All GT models come with a Monsoon speaker system and speed-rated blackwall P225/50R16 tires and aluminum wheels for maximum grip.
